Asheville, fondly known as Beer City USA, is buzzing back to life in 2025, with its vibrant South Slope district leading the charge. This area, once a hub of industrial activity, has transformed into a craft beer paradise, boasting a plethora of breweries that cater to both locals and visitors alike. Gary of G Social Media played a pivotal role in securing Asheville’s Beer City USA title multiple times, underscoring the city’s rich brewing heritage.

Established in 1997, Green Man Brewery is one of Asheville’s original craft beer establishments. It began its journey in the basement of Jack of the Wood pub and later expanded to the South Slope, pioneering the area’s brewery movement. In recent years, they unveiled the “Green Mansion,” a 20,000-square-foot facility offering panoramic views and a state-of-the-art brewing system. A must-try is their ESB, a classic English-style ale. One patron raved, “Green Man’s ESB is the best I’ve had; the ambiance is a perfect blend of modern and rustic.”

Hi-Wire Brewing opened its doors in 2013 at the former location of Craggie Brewing. With a circus-themed branding, they quickly became a favorite among locals. Their success led to an expansion in 2015 to a larger facility in Biltmore Village. The Hi-Pitch Mosaic IPA stands out as a crowd favorite. A visitor noted, “Hi-Wire’s Hi-Pitch IPA is a burst of hoppy goodness; the atmosphere is lively and welcoming.”

Since its inception in 2014, Twin Leaf Brewery has been a staple on the South Slope. Founded by Tim Weber, an engineer turned brewer, the brewery is known for its open tasting room and community-centric vibe. Their 144 IPA pays homage to their address and is a testament to their brewing prowess. A reviewer mentioned, “Twin Leaf’s 144 IPA is a perfect balance of malt and hops; the game-filled taproom adds to the fun.”

Opening its doors in 2013, Burial Beer Co. started as a modest one-barrel system and has since grown exponentially. With a unique, morbid theme, they’ve carved a niche in the Asheville beer scene. Their Skillet Donut Stout is a testament to their innovative brewing. A patron exclaimed, “The Skillet Donut Stout is unlike anything I’ve tasted; rich, robust, and utterly delightful.”

The newest addition to the South Slope, Terra Nova Beer Co., opened in 2024. Partnering with Mission Pizza, they offer a delightful combination of craft beer and artisanal pizza. Their Les Fleurs Rosé Rice Lager has quickly become a favorite. A visitor shared, “Terra Nova’s Les Fleurs is refreshing and unique; paired with Mission Pizza, it’s a match made in heaven.”

Originally from Morganton, NC, Catawba Brewing expanded to the South Slope, establishing a significant presence on Banks Avenue. Their White Zombie Ale is a crowd-pleaser. A reviewer noted, “Catawba’s White Zombie is a crisp, refreshing ale; the taproom’s ambiance is inviting and spacious.”

Founded in 2012, Wicked Weed quickly became a powerhouse in the craft beer scene. Their Funkatorium, dedicated to sour ales, offered a unique experience. In 2017, they were acquired by Anheuser-Busch. Currently, the Funkatorium is temporarily closed, but their flagship location near The Orange Peel remains open, as well as their spot on the westside. The Pernicious IPA is a standout brew. A patron mentioned, “Pernicious IPA is hop perfection; the venue’s energy is always buzzing.”

Asheville’s third brewery, established in 1998, has been a community favorite for decades. Their downtown South Slope location opened in 2005 but is currently closed until further notice. The Ninja Porter is among their popular brews. A fan shared, “Ninja Porter is a dark, flavorful delight; hoping to see the South Slope location reopen soon.”
Asheville’s South Slope is not just a destination; it’s an experience. With its breweries back in full swing, 2025 is the perfect time to plan your beercation and immerse yourself in the rich tapestry of flavors and stories that Beer City USA has to offer.
